South along the coast from Jarrow were double monasteries (for monks and nuns) on the coast at Hartlepool and Whitby. Hild, a Northumbrian princess with a reputation for wisdom and spirituality, was abbess of Hartlepool and then of Whitby. The only surviving account of her life was written by Bede in his Ecclesiastical History.
