Bede's World

The Age of Bede » The Eastern windows » The Lindisfarne window

North along the coast from Jarrow was the monastery of Lindisfarne. Bede wrote accounts of the life of Lindisfarne's most famous saint, Cuthbert, in prose and in verse, on the request of the monks of Lindisfarne, using first-hand accounts of many of them. In his scientific work, Bede showed that tides were "dragged" around the earth by the moon - centuries before gravity was discovered. Bede's knowledge of the Lindisfarne tides, either through travelling on and off the island himself or talking to others who had made the journey, may well have influenced his work on tides.
