The Friends of Bede's World exist to help support and develop the important work of the Museum by raising money to improve facilities, support research, fund publishing ventures and develop the education programme, as well as providing vital voluntary help in the Museum and on the Anglo-Saxon demonstration farm.

Members pay an annual subscription for which they receive:

  • Unlimited free entry to the Museum and Gyrwe, the Anglo-Saxon demonstration farm.
  • A lively and varied programme of talks, visits, social and fundraising events throughout the year.
  • A regular newsletter giving details of Museum exhibitions and events and Friends activities.

Recent talks have ranged over such subjects as local history and archaeology, pilgrimages and travel, bird-watching and bee-keeping. There have been visits to other museums and important Anglo-Saxon sites, as well as special suppers and Christmas concerts.

The Friends currently support a programme of Saturday talks at Bede's World and have recently assisted the museum with the purchase of an electric wheelchair for visitor use, the production of the museum events leaflet, equipment for Bede the Scientist education activities for Science week, and the purchase of plants for the Herb Garden. Many members of the Friends support the museum as volunteers, for example as volunteer museum guides or members of the Herb Club.
