sheep On the experimental farm called Gyrwe (pronounced 'Jeerwe') after the Old English name for Jarrow, we are exploring the world of the people who lived outside of the monastery: the world from which Bede sprung. You can see this as part of the visitor attractions when you visit us in Jarrow.

This season on the farm

BUILDINGS

Full-size reconstructions of buildings from Anglo-Saxon England, based on the evidence of archaeological work in Northumbria and using the materials of the time.

ANIMALS

The animals are specially bred to simulate the type of animal which was seen in Anglo-Saxon England. Cattle are smaller than we are used to seeing today and sheep more varied.

PLANTS

We are growing ancient strains of wheat and vegetables such as those which Bede and his brothers in the monastery might have eaten.

ACTIVITIES

The experimental farm provides an excellent setting for our living history events and other activities.
