The Museum

Step through the door of the museum and into the world in which Bede lived and worked. Fascinating fun for all the family, the museum begins with a permanent “Age of Bede” exhibition that tells the story of life over 1300 years ago. Finds from the excavation at St. Paul’s monastery give an insight into Anglo-Saxon life – with remarkable coloured window glass, Europe’s largest early collection of its kind, being amongst the display.

Your path through the museum is followed by Bede’s narrative, with translated quotes adorning the walls helping to tell Bede’s thoughts and interpretations.

Be greeted by the enchanting sound of monks singing before listening to Bede’s thoughts and discoveries in our sound pods. Watch how manuscripts were made, and find out how to count like a monk in our interactive science gallery – where children can even try on a monk’s habit! Discover how Bede linked the movements of the moon with the tides through our hands-on interactive display, and also how Bede’s influences still remain today through Easter and our calendar system!
