World Heritage Bid

Wearmouth-Jarrow in North East England is one of the most important historic sites in the world, which is why it is the UK’s nominated site for World Heritage Site status in 2011. The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery is centred around St. Peter’s Church in Wearmouth, Sunderland and St. Paul’s Church in Jarrow , and was home to the Venerable Bede .

Bede’s presence and work in Wearmouth-Jarrow made the area one of the most influential institutions in the western world through its contribution to learning, creativity and the shaping of European culture.

World Heritage Status will place a spotlight on the site, the region and Britain, creating an increase in tourism potentially worth millions of pounds to the local economy and securing jobs. It will increase even further the educational potential of Bede’s World and enrich the identity of the local community.

Bede was one of the earliest and greatest scholars and made an outstanding contribution to learning and scholarship from his monastic home at Wearmouth-Jarrow. We need support to widen understanding of that fact, and so capitalise on the outstanding opportunity that exists to protect these unique places for future generations and drive forward the cultural life and economy of the North East of England.
